The BEST in the Business! Quality and dependable service when it really counts. I cannot recommend Matt Gilley and his company highly enough. True professionals.
I was first introduced to Matt Gilley, owner of MG Marine, around the end of 2019. We purchased property on Ono Island in the middle of 2019. A decision to build a boathouse and pier before the house was done with the hope of having a place to gather while the house was being built. This was our first experience on the water so I had no idea how to design a boathouse. Ono’s 40’x40’ limitation only added to the challenge. Matt was very generous with his time taking me to other boathouses he built on the island to show as examples to help provide ideas as to what we should build. Once the design was finalized, Matt was instrumental in obtaining the Ono permit as well as the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) approval. Matt builds a first rate product. There is nothing I would do differently. He built a solid boathouse and pier that withstood Hurricane Sally. With the exception of some damage sustained to the pier from a neighbor’s boat that broke from its mooring during the storm, there wasn’t a scratch or movement from the elevated tide on the boathouse or pier from Sally. Given the general damage and destruction of boathouses in the area, he was very prompt in working me into his schedule to repair the damage. The storm did damage to our bulkhead that demanded repair or replacement. The original was made of plastic panels. It was decided to build one similar to the neighbor’s bulkhead in style and appearance. Matt constructed the replacement wall with marine treated timbers with the same quality and eye towards strength and resilience to future storms. It is gorgeous and exceeded my expectations. Matt built the boathouse and bulkhead within the quoted amount. There was no extra this or that. Sometime after the completion of the bulkhead, Matt sold his company to another company in the business of marine construction, including the name MG Marine. I recently learned that the arrangement Matt struct did not turn out favorably. I do not know if MG Marine continues to exist, but his ex employees have left and joined Matt under the new name, Gilley Marine Construction. I have heard that Matt’s former operation was mismanaged as Matt was looking to exit marine construction and get into home building closer to home, leaving customers and vendors dissatisfied with their experience and relationship. The mismanagement has generated unfavorable rumors that have caused Matt difficulty with vendors as he is trying to reestablish an operation and needs credit. I have another project and immediately reached out to Matt. I have to put up a fence around the pool and put up a couple louver panels. I didn’t know for sure if it was in Matt’s wheelhouse, but assumed anything dealing with wood, water and sand was within his capabilities. I was correct. Matt has a highly skilled and experienced team that performs at a very high level and creates a first - rate product. I would not use anyone else. Given his recent setback and unkind rumors swirling around, I would not hesitate engaging Matt for any project. Both his word and product is solid.
They did a great job adding a baby pen on the wharf and reduing our steps and railing at the house.
He recently did an outdoor addition to our existing home, and it was fabulous!!! Exceeded my expectations actually!! I have seen a lot of his work over the years, and he is consistently the best there is!
Because our project involved shoreline restoration, the marine contractor needed to work closely with our consultants. Matt spent time onsite planning with the consultant and me. Matt was prompt and responsive in execution of the plan, providing a well constructed breakwater at a reasonable cost. We highly recommend Matt, especially for out of the ordinary marine construction projects or work with restoration consultants.
5/5 experience with Matt and his team at Gilley Marine Construction from start to finish. The job was done quickly and exceeded my expectations.
